The Matrix is Getting a Reboot, Black Panther Actor Eyed for Lead Role

Warner Bros.’ sci-fi movie about a computer hacker who wakes up from a computer simulation and into the real world to join the fight against an army of advanced robots, The Matrix, is about to get a reboot, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Michael B. Jordan, the actor best known for his work in Creed, Fruitvale Station, The Fantastic Four and Marvel’s upcoming Black Panther is reportedly being eyed for the lead role. Sources told the magazine, however, that certain projects need to be cleared in order for Jordan to commit to the role.

Zak Penn, best known as the screenwriter on projects like 2008’s The Incredible Hulk, Elektra and Steven Spielberg’s upcoming adaptation of the dystopian sci-fi novel Ready Player One will write the treatment for the reboot.

One of the biggest questions is whether the Wachowski siblings, who directed the original 1999 film and its sequels, The Matrix Reloaded and The Matrix Revolutions, will be involved. At this point, the two are not attached to the project. Neither are any of the original actors, including Keanu Reeves — who played the original Neo in the trilogy — Laurence Fishburne or Carrie-Anne Moss.

While promoting John Wick: Chapter 2, however, Reeves told the Hollywood Reporter he would be interested in returning for another installment in the franchise, but under the condition that the Wachowskis were involved. Both Lana and Lilly Wachowski are currently involved in the second season of Netflix’s Sense8.

There is currently no estimated release date for the movie. Polygon has reached out to Warner Bros. for additional comment and will update if more information becomes available.
